The Black River FFA Chapter started off their Spring Judging Invitationals on February 17, at the Mt. Gilead Judging Invitational at the Morrow County Fairgrounds. Team members participated in the Horse Judging, General Livestock, and Nature Interpretation competitions.
The Nature Interpretation competition consists of a students’ capability to evaluate and/or determine techniques of leading nature and wildlife programs. Contestants will identify problem plant and animal species, including invasive and non-native species, and select those practices to best control the species based on the scenario provided. In addition, each student will complete a 50 question written exam. The following team members participated in the competition: William Blicha (13th), Trent Youngeberg (18th), Cannon Jackson (29th), and Amanda Mycek (45th).
The Horse Judging competition consists of judging two halter classes, one performance, and a class of hay, identifying different types of tack and equipment, and taking a 50-question written test. Overall the horse team placed 3rd out of 33 teams scoring 1,252 points. The team consisted of Chloee Howard (3rd), Madison Bias (20th), Kailee Baker (34th), and Melanie Grove (81st).
The General Livestock competition consists of members judging both breeding and market classes for sheep, goats, swine and beef cattle. Participants also answer conformation and production questions for each class in addition to completing a current market grid. The General Livestock team earned 5th out of 38 teams. The team consisted of members, Hope Diaz (11th), Cori Aviles (30th), Breanna Clifford (59th), Molly Cordonnier (71st), Alexa Shearer (111th), Anna Shearer (121st), Brianna Englehart (209th), Allison Herbert (243rd), Kaitlyn Long (262nd) and Jared Bradford (269th).
