“The Medina County Farm Bureau donated two grain bin rescue tubes to local emergency response agencies Friday. The large metal tubes can be placed around a person stuck in the grain. The tube forms a dam to prevent grain from sifting against the person and an auger mechanism allows emergency personnel to easily remove the grain from around the person.”
“It’s like quicksand,” Fitzpatrick said about the grain inside silos. “If they sink enough, grain presses against their chest (and) they’re not able to breathe.”
“Silos are a common sight in Medina County, but the same structures that are capable of storing large quantities of grain also can be deadly traps, Ohio Farm Bureau regional director John Fitzpatrick said.” Read more.
